Stoner Movies are one of those pleasures that non-smokers might not understand. But to me and I guess to most of us herb lovers, movies about Cheech and Chong’s or Harold and Kumar’s adventures, just keep cracking me up. Movies about the cannabis culture have been around for ages and almost every year another great movie about smoking weed, or one that is just more fun to watch when you are high, pops up. To point some of them out, we have made a list of the 10 stoner movies that belong in our* Top 10.
Zativo's Pick of 'Best Stoner Movies':
"How High" is a fun movie about the magic of marijuana starring Redman and Method Man playing the roles of two stoners that go by the name of Silas and Jamal. The two smoke some homegrown weed that was grown with fertilizer made from the remains of their recently deceased friend Ivory (Chuck Davis), it turns out that smoking the weed brings back their dead friends ghost. While they would have been doomed to fail all classes in college, Ivory's ghost gives them all the answers they need to pass their SAT (or THC as it is called in the movie). Their score is that high that they manage to get accepted for Harvard University and that's when all the real fun starts...
"Friday" is another great movie starring a hip hop star. This time it is Ice Cube pairing up with Chris Tucker who play two unemployed stoners that find themselves in a lot of trouble when instead of selling a batch of herb for a dealer named Big Worm, they smoke it all and need to come up with the drugs or the money before the end of the day. It's one of those movies you watch on a lazy sunday afternoon when you are hungry for some good hip hop and some good jokes. I am still a big fan of Ice Cube, on the screen and coming from my speakers.
"Half Baked" is another one of those ultimate stoner movies you can’t miss out on. The plot itself is so stupid even when reading it you will laugh. A few friends try to come up with money by selling grass that they stole from a lab to bail their friend out of jail after their he got arested to prison for feeding junk food to a diabetic police horse and with that killing the poor horse. I guess any plot goes for a stoner movie in this case but this one sure is original. Of course there is an underlying love story when the main character Thurgood, well played by Dave Chappelle, falls in love with a chick called Mary Jane (obviously), but for me personally the dumb jokes and the whole dumb adventures makes me totally able to ignore that.
“Don't worry, man. All we gotta do to get you out is to get ten percent of ten million dollars. Which by our calculations is... “
“...Fucking impossible, man!”
"Dazed and Confused" is a super-feel good movie about a group of high school graduates and their last day of school. The story takes place in the colorful 70’s and everybody is just trying to get laid, drunk and stoned. The incoming freshmen need to get hazed and some moral issues like drug usage and authority are being discussed over a good amount of alcohol, weed and emotional moments. This movie always makes me want to go back in time about 4 decades and be a teenager again. Matthew McConaughey plays a great character; “Wooderson”, who is much older than the rest of the group of friends but keeps hanging out with them because of the young high school girls around them.
Wooderson: Say, man, you got a joint?
Mitch: No, not on me, man.
Wooderson: It'd be a lot cooler if you did.
Dude, Where's My Car? is a movie we potheads can probably all relate to; you wake up one morning after a great night of drinking, smoking and partying and have no freaking idea what the hell happened the night before, or where you might have parked your car. Well this happens to me every now and then of course, but i have never met with superhot aliens who are promising to suck my d*ck, or a transsexual stripper that gave me a suitcase full of stolen money, or even found out the next day that I had some big-ass ugly tattoo on my back. But all this and a lot more of crazy stuff happens to Jesse and Chester, who seem to head from one crazy situation to the next, trying to find their misplaced car. One of the funniest moments in the movie is where a stoner-dog is smoking a big joint while sharing some hilarious wisdom.
We all know this moment of being baked and wanting to eat something specific. The real problem starts when you need to move your ass off the couch in order to get the thing you want if you don't have it in the house. "Harold & Kumar go to White Castle" is a hilarious movie about two typical stoners having the munchies and craving for burgers from a place called White Castle after seeing a commercial on the TV. Harold Lee and Kumar Patel go on a crazed adventure to get to White Castle while having to fight obstacles such as a crazy racoon, an escaped cheetah, a racist cop, a group of agressive jocks and Neil Patrick Harris (Doogy Howser) who is tripping balls and steals their car after they give the dude a ride. Harold & Kumar go to White Castle is the first movie of a trilogy, but this first one, like as hapens with a lot of trilogies, stays the best one.
"Pineapple Express" is a great movie about Dale, played by Seth Rogen, one of my favorite actors of the moment. Dale is a process server that accidentally witnesses a murder. The one thing that might help the killers finding him, is a joint with he left behind after fleeing away from the murder scene. It would be pretty impossible to track somebody with just a joint wasn’t it so that the joint was rolled with Pineapple Express, a strain that is so rare, that only one dealer in town can provide it.a total stoner . Dale, his dealer Saul and that dude that played Kenny Powers in Eastbound & Down try to figure out ways to escape the gangsters that are hunting them down and can't seem to stay out of a lot of super funny problems that appear on their way.
Saul: Just sit back and get ready to enjoy some of the rarest weed known to mankind.
Dale: It's really that rare?
Saul: It's, like, the rarest. It's almost a shame to smoke it. It's like killing a unicorn... with, like, a bomb.
"Clerks" is a low budget black and white movie that became a cult hit within no time. The movie is about two slackers in their late twenties named Dante and Randal who are working at a convenience store and a video store. The story is portraying what was supposed to be a regular day in their life as they annoy customers, discuss life, girls and movies while being at work. The movie is filled with sharp dialogues and superfunny situations and jokes following each other up in a very high tempo. Outside of the convenience store is the hangout and dealing spot of Silent Bob, played by kevin Smith, director of the film and Jay. Silent Bob and Jay are a superfunny duo that hangs out by the shop everyday and every now and then they talk to Dante and Randal while trying to shoplift from the shop. In the later movies that Kevin Smith made, such as "Chasing Amy", "Mallrats", "Dogma" and the movie that is tatally based on the two characters; "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back". Clerks is a movie I have probably seen about a hundred times and I still can watch it anytime.
PS. OK, to be honest... Clerks is not a stoner movie pur sang, but since this movie is such an absolute timeless classic and weed is part of a few scenes, we just placed it on number 3. Because we can.
"Up in Smoke" is a true classic in the series of movies made by Richard "Cheech" Marin and Tommy Chong. It was their first feature-length movie and in time it has become a real cult classic.
I must have seen it about a hundred times and it still cracks me up each time. The storyline is truly glamorous as Cheech and Chong play a couple of stoners that meet by chance and end up driving a van made out of marijuana from Mexico back to the States, without even realizing it. The movie is the ultimate stoner comedy where one stoned joke follows the other in a rapid tempo while the duo embarks upon the strangest adventures. This classic has set the bar for any following stoner movie since then and Cheech and Chong are still the true kings of odd stoner dialogues and hilarious jokes me.
Border Guard: "So, how long you've been in Mexico?"
Pedro: "A week. I mean a day."
Border Guard: "Well, which is it? A week or a day?"
Pedro: "A weekday."
Without a doubt, our absolute number one... "The Big Lebowski" tells the story of Jeff Lebowski, played by Jeff Bridges. Jeff Lebowski, who likes to be called "The Dude", is a middle aged stoner hippie who likes to hang on his couch in his bathrobe smoking weed or having the occasional acid-flashback and go bowling with his loser friends. The Dude gets mistaken for a millionaire also named Jeffrey Lebowski and suddenly his easy going life gets shaken up by thugs, three strange looking German nihilist gangsters, a kidnapping and the death of Donny, one of the Dude's bowling buddies (an amazing performance by Steve Buscemi). All of this while the Dude just wants to chill out and smoke his doobie...
The Dude: Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.
Ok, even though this is a Top 10 we felt we should add this movie because its just too funny to leave out of this list. Also it is the only movie in the list that somehow has a bit negative view on stoners and being stoned. Nevertheless "Smiley Face" really is a movie worth watching as Anna Faris plays a fantastic role here. Jane, Anne Faris, is a young actress that accidentally eats all of her roommate’s weed brownies and then has to get through the day while being incredibly stoned. Her supposed-to-be-a-normal-day consists of getting more weed, replacing the brownies, doing an audition, dealing with an ass-of-a-boyfriend, paying some bills and some other stuff that normally should be really easy, but now turns into a totally crazy adventure including hallucinations, epiphanies, selling weed to innocent people and lots more of paranoid shit you will recognize yourselves from adventures you might have had when you where just too freaking high from eating some super-strong brownies. Fuck yeah! Jane rules and Anna Faris, I love you man!
Jane: They say that true potheads stops getting the munchies after a certain point. I mean the true pothead wouldn't even say the word munchies. I dont know what the true pothead would say."munchos" or "hungries" or something. At any rate, I still love to eat when I'm high. So fuck you if you're too cool to get hungry when you're stoned.
* This Top 10 List of Best Stoner Movies is totally based on our own taste. Although we do have seen a lot of movies, our range is still limited and of course we do know that there are lots more great stoner flicks around. But we had to make some choices and didn't want to make a Top 100 because you know, well, that's just too much work :)
